Stony Brook Basketball fans, the semester has begun, and it's time to Get Your RED On and support your Seawolves! This week, the men's & women's basketball teams will play three games at Pritchard Gymnasium. The men tip off Wednesday against Hartford at 7 p.m., putting their nine-game home winning streak on the line against the Hawks. The game will be televised locally on Optimum Local Channel 118.

Then on Friday night, the men's team will host a RED-OUT against Boston University at 9 p.m. All fans are encouraged to wear red in support of the Seawolves, who will be wearing the red jerseys for the occasion. Tickets to this game are SOLD OUT, but if you do not have your tickets already, you can watch on television because the game will be nationally televised on ESPNU and streamed online at ESPN3. For the student crowd, there will be prizes to win, so be sure to wear your RED.

The women's basketball team will wrap up the jam-packed week with a Saturday afternoon affair against Vermont at 2 p.m. The Seawolves knocked off the Catamounts up in Burlington earlier this month and will be looking for a clean sweep on Saturday.

Register Now for February 18 Stony Brook Athletics Youth Sports Clinic

Stony Brook University’s Athletics Department will once again be hosting a National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on Saturday, February 18. NGWSD is a day to honor the accomplishments of female athletes and to highlight the benefits of staying active.

To help promote an active and healthy lifestyle, Stony Brook will be holding a Youth Sports Clinic, with registration beginning at 10:30 am and culminating with a women’s basketball game against New Hampshire at 2:00 pm.

Girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 13 are invited to participate in the Sports Clinic, which will be held in the Indoor Sports Complex and will feature current Stony Brook student-athletes from many different sports leading the clinic.

Sneakers and play clothes are required and there is a $5 admission fee, which includes the clinic, a t-shirt, and a ticket to the women’s basketball game for each clinic participant. Pre-registration is mandatory and the registration deadline is February 13th. Space will be limited so be sure to register early to reserve your spot.

Qualifications

Must be available to work nights and weekends. Must havea strong interest in sports and working knowledge of collegiate athletics. Musthave strong communication skills. Knowledge of the rules of soccer, football,volleyball and basketball are a plus. Knowledge of how to work a camcorder andedit video in iMovie a plus. Willingness to work during winter break 2011-12also a plus.

Visit the Student Activities Center from 6:00 to 8:00 pm when local farmer Scott Chaskey appears as the guest speaker. The viewing of Food Inc. will follow the lecture.
At 8:00 pm, the documentary Forks Over Knives will be shown at the SAC. The movie examines the claim that most of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled or reversed by eliminating our animal-based diets. It will be followed by a short documentary, Community Bloom.

Monday, October 24
Food Network chef Marc Bynum will be on hand from noon to 3:00 pm at the Student Activities Center Traditions Lounge with sustainable cooking demonstrations. His recipes will be featured at the Native Spice Express in the SAC.Also that day, purchase fresh, local produce at a farmers market from noon to 3:00 pm located at the SAC Plaza. Meal plans are accepted.

Remember to tune in this Monday, October 10, 2011 as The Spirit of Stony Brook performs in the New York City Columbus Day Parade. The parade route runs from 47th St. to 77th St. and will be broadcast live from Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on WABC-7 (NY)from 12 Noon to 3:00pm E.S.T.

The Spirit of Stony Brook is proud to be led in the parade by Stony Brook University President, Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and Mr. Richard T. Nasti, Board Member of the Stony Brook Foundation and distinguished alumnus. We are joined also by members of the Stony Brook Dance Team and the best mascot in college sports, Wolfie.

For any of our fans taking the trip into the city to watch us perform live, there will be two viewing areas for you. The Grand Stands located between 67th and 69th Street offer captivating views of the parade. In addition, special accomodations and viewing areas are reserved for family members of all parade marchers between 61st and 66nd street (on 5th Ave.).

We hope that you will all be able to join us in some capacity as we march forward.

Come down to Pritchard Gymnasium this Friday night at 7 p.m. as one lucky student will get the chance to win $100 cash!

September 30th's match against Albany will be the first of six home volleyball contests where a student will compete to serve a ball into a target to win money.

On gameday, a student chosen at random will get one chance to serve a volleyball from one side of the court to the other and into a hole. If the student serves an "Ace in the Hole" they take away $100. If the contestant is unsuccessful then the prize will roll over to the next game where a student will get the chance to win $200. The prize money will continue to roll over until there is a winner.

Stony Brook Seawolves Football: Family Football Day At John J. Burns Park Aug. 13

2011 preseason camp has officially begun and THIS SATURDAY, August 13th Stony Brook will hold a public scrimmage at John J. Burns Town Park, 4990 Merrick Rd., Massapequa. Fans will be able to gain unique insight into the program as Priore will be wearing a microphone for fans to hear.

The day’s festivities will begin with youth clinic from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. featuring players and coaches from Stony Brook University as instructors. A DJ will be on hand playing today’s best music, and there will be a free BBQ for clinic participants and their families. Coach Priore will then give fans insight into the program and will run the Seawolves through a two-hour scrimmage beginning at 5 p.m. All fans are invited for an autograph session with the Stony Brook players following the scrimmage. Throughout the day, fans will have the opportunity to buy Stony Brook merchandise and season tickets. Schedule posters and schedule cards also will be available. Don't miss out!

On Monday, August 1, Stony Brook University Athletics will host the 2nd Annual FREE "Movie Night" presented by Team Ardolino and Realty Connect USA at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at 7 p.m (Raindate Tuesday, August 2nd). The gates will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission for all spectators is FREE.

The 2nd Annual FREE "Movie Night" will feature a presentation of the Universal Pictures film "Despicable Me" (PG) on the stadium jumbo video board. Concessions will be available and spectators will be able to watch the movie from the stands or on the stadium field. Now in his second year as president of Stony Brook University (succeeding Power List Hall of Famer Shirley Strum Kenny), Samuel Stanley is overseeing one of Long Island’s most vital institutions: Stony Brook University is responsible for nearly 4 percent of all economic activity in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and approximately 7.5 percent of total jobs in Suffolk County. And the future suggests bigger things, still. In response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s $35 million “NY SUNY 2020 Challenge Grant,” Stanley recently unveiled a multi-tiered plan to increase student enrollment, create local jobs and enhance healthcare services on LI—including a plan to build a 25,000-square-foot translational medical research building, which would be located at the Stony Brook University Medical Center campus and focus on cancer research, advanced medical imaging and cancer care.

Stony Brook University will play host to the 2011 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship Friday and Sunday at LaValle Stadium. In the semifinals, No. 1 Maryland takes on No. 5 Duke, and No. 2 Northwestern plays No. 3 North Carolina. All three games will be televised regionally on the Big Ten Network and Comcast SportsNet.

Tickets for both days are selling fast. Over 6,000 tickets have been sold in the 8,200-seat stadium. Tickets for the semifinals are still available online until 11 a.m., Friday morning. Tickets for the championship game on Sunday will be available online until Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for youths ages 12 and under. All-session passes are also still available online until Friday at 11 a.m.

In-person ticket sales will begin on gamedays four hours before the first game. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for youths ages 12 and under on gameday.

All three games will be streamed live on NCAA.com. Friday's semifinals will air regionally on tape delay on the Big Ten Network, Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. Sunday's championship game will air live on the Big Ten Network immediately following the Big Ten Baseball Championship and will also air live on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. The 2011 and 2012 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships are coming to LaValle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University. Stony Brook will host the semifinals and national championship game of each tournament and will crown a national champion. The 2011 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship will take place May 27 and 29.

Stony Brook has had two NCAA Tournaments come to campus over the last few years. The Seawolves hosted the 2006 and 2010 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship North Quarterfinals, and in 2010, saw a record 10,024 fans at LaValle Stadium as Stony Brook fell to top-seeded Virginia.

College students facing finals often struggle to keep their heads above water. But Friday at Stony Brook University, that idiom turned much more literal -- and fun.

The school held its 23rd annual Roth Regatta, with students racing custom-designed boats, made entirely of cardboard and duct tape, across the 40-year-old man-made pond located in the heart of Roth Quad. Some boats, including one shaped like a Chinese dragon, made it through the waters multiple times unscathed. Some, like the Bat Boat, didn’t make it 10 feet off the starting line.

“I come to the regatta every year,” said junior Anthony Sahagun. “I’ve always been an observer, but this is my first year doing it.”

Sahagun’s boat, a canoe design, finished the race but took on too much water. He and his team had to dismantle it to remove it from the pond.

“We still had fun out here and we had a lot of fun building the boat,” he said.

Jerrold Stein, Stony Brook’s associate vice president and dean of students, estimated that more than 3,000 people turned out in the 70-degree sun to watch their friends (or laugh at them) as they paddled through the muddy waters.

“I think it’s great,” said spectator Derek Gamboa, a junior who attended for the first time. “I think it’s really great to have everyone come together.... I really love everyone’s creativity this year.”

Long Island’s walk will be held on our campus, and you are invited to represent Stony Brook, walk with your colleagues, friends, and neighbors, and raise money for this important cause.

3rd Annual BENCH 5K Run/Walk and 1K Fun Run

The third annual 5K run/walk and 1K fun run to help fight pediatric cancer and benefit patients being treated at Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital will take place in Stony Brook on May 7. The 1K fun run starts at 8:45 AM and the 5K run/walk starts at 9:30 a.m., at The Bench Bar & Grill, located at 1095 Rt. 25A. This year’s run will also include a wheelchair division.

The race course, which begins and ends at The Bench, goes through historic Stony Brook Village and alongside Stony Brook Harbor. Following the run/walk all participants can enjoy free live entertainment and free food and beverages provided by The BENCH Bar & Grill and Brooklyn Brewery.

Pre-race registration is $20 per person. Registration after May 3 is $25 per person. Registration includes a New Balance performance running shirt for the first 600 to register. ABOUT SOULS4SOULS
Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you. The charity distributes these shoes to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away nearly 12 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently donating one pair every 7 seconds.) The shoes have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States. Soles4Souls has been featured in Runner's World, Ladies’ Home Journal, National Geographic’s Green Guide, and The New York Times. It has appeared on CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, BBC, CNN and thousands of regional news outlets across North America. Soles4Souls is a 501(c)(3) recognized by the IRS and donating parties are eligible for tax advantages. Anyone can join their cause.

Soles4Souls facilitates the donations of shoes, which are used to aid the hurting worldwide. Shoe companies, retailers, and individuals can donate footwear (both new and used).

The idea behind gifts of shoes is nothing new to the Soles4Souls team, as they coordinated relief efforts for the Asian Tsunami and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, netting over 1 million pairs donated for these disasters. The team originally operated as www.katrinashoes.org with several churches partnering in the collection and distribution of footwear.
